The Irish Reiki websites that Irishskeptic.com visited to write this article have three elements in common:1.Each website contains the words “energy” and “life force”. None of the websites define exactly what they mean by these words. 2.The websites claim to provide “absentee (distant) healing”. 3. They also feature workshops, where Reiki “techniques” are taught, usually for a substantial fee. Reiki Energy and The Life ForceOne Reiki website states:

“A Sampling of Beneficial Uses of Reiki Distant Healing Energy Reduces: Stress, Anxiety, Surgery Discomfort, Depression, Test AnxietyIncreases: Personal Growth, Relaxation, Creativity, Emotional Healing, PeaceImproves: Clarity, Relationships, Public Speaking/Presentations, Interviews, Auditions”.

In science, the word energy is defined as “the capacity of a physical system to perform work.” Energy is a unit of measurement and nothing more than that. Unfortunately, practitioners of Reiki seem unable to tell us anything specific about their use of the word energy. It is also unclear what part of the body is being “rebalanced” or how this “rebalancing” is achieved. No clinical evidence was provided on any of the websites I visited to support the “healing” claims. This is not really surprising given the fact that Reiki practitioners believe the “Universal Life Energy” cannot be detected by any scientific instruments. However it can, apparently, be felt and manipulated by those special people who pay to learn the proper techniques. Absentee (Distance) HealingNone of the Irish Reiki websites I visited provided any details of how the distant healing process might work. Prices vary for this service, one practitioner charges €20 per healing session whilst other adepts provide it free of charge. One Reiki practitioner, with no apparent medical qualification, refers to the people seeking distant healing as “patients”.If the healing fails, however, the “healer” may claim that it is because the patient is resisting the healing energy. Reiki WorkshopsWorkshops feature prominently on Irish Reiki websites. The workshops are on three levels, each with an associated cost. Reiki Level 1 “teaches self healing and confers the ability to heal family and friends on a non-professional basis.” The cost for this course is generally around €250. Reiki Level 2 incorporates additional attunement which “multiplies the healing energy that can be channeled.”Cost: around €350. Level 2 qualification allows budding Reiki practitioners the chance to recover their course fees by offering distant healing services. Reiki Level 3 incorporates Initiation into Reiki Mastership, “the final attunement to Reiki energy which multiplies healing energy by an infinite number of times. This results in more powerful healing and faster healingtimes.”Reiki Level 3 mastership is also a teaching qualification. Cost: around €500. Reiki masters are then allowed to pass on Reiki techniques by running their own workshops, presumably with a similar price structure.

Words such as detox, natural, chemical free, boosting immune system, energy channeling, balanced, life force, radiation etc. are often used to sell products and services, with little or no scientific evidence supporting the claim being made.

IrishSkeptic.com examines some of these claims to see if they are scientifically correct.

Four Forms of Reiki Meditation

Meditation is an integral part of Reiki, a traditional Japanese healing practice. According to the practitioners of Reiki, Reiki meditation can have a number of benefits, among them enhanced relaxation (leading to the healing of self), clairvoyance (ability to mystically foresee things), greater awareness and greater ability to visualize, which is important since we are more likely to achieve things we can visualize in life than things that we cannot visualize. Reiki meditation is also the means to balance one’s energy, which is what in Reiki parlance leads to the healing of oneself, and which is also what gives you the ability to heal others through Reiki via ‘energy attunement’. Through Reiki meditation, one is also supposed to attain a sense of detachment, which would empower them to ‘go with the flow’ rather than trying to force things to happen, which is what one would be inclined to do in default; naturally leading to frustration throughout life as most things in life are things we cannot really control.Reiki meditations can be seen as falling into four major forms.First is breathing meditation, and this form of meditations is always a prelude to other forms. In one of the breathing forms of meditation, one is advised to breathe slowly, while focusing their thoughts on Reiki. In another form of breathing Reiki meditation, one is advised to breath ‘naturally’ (as opposed to breathing slowly), and this is usually employed towards the end of Reiki breathing meditation sessions, as one transitions from the meditative state to the ‘ordinary’ state, maybe in setting the stage for a Reiki healing session.Another form of Reiki meditation is visualization-based meditation. Among the things visualized here include the Reiki symbol (for Reiki practitioners who have attained the second degree of Reiki training), as well as one’s goals in which one is seeking Reiki’s help in their attainment (since Reiki can also help in the attainment of ordinary day to day goals, beyond healing which is its most recognized application). The idea in the visualization-based Reiki meditation is to see the object of one’s meditation with one’s own ‘third eye’ – and doing so clearly. Then there is postural meditation, where a Reiki practitioner is able to attain the meditative state through the use of various postures. This type of meditation is normally used as a prelude to the other types of meditations, including the breathing Reiki meditation (which is itself a prelude to things like Reiki visualization-meditation). In postural terms, meditation may be carried out while lying down or sitting, among other postures. Another form of Reiki meditation is the moment to moment meditation, manifest through the way the practitioner goes about their day to day roles. This stems from the understanding that things like ‘avoiding anger, avoiding worry, and devotion in one’s vocation’ are among the things required of a Reiki practitioner, on a moment to moment basis. And these also – combined with a detached attitude on a moment to moment basis can be termed as forms of meditation too.

I have been a Reiki Master since 1996. Living in an ashram in India, my daily routine includes yoga, meditation, reiki practice and study of herbs. I have traveled almost all over the world teaching Reiki. Being a wild life enthusiast, I am passionate about climate change and environment pollution. I encourage my students to take part in Nature Walks to help understand plants and herbs which have medicinal properties. I strongly believe that natural remedies exist for all types of ailments and must be the first choice of treatment for any disease. To get rid of modern day stress and strain we must resort to alternative medicine. Reiki is one such healing method which has provided relief to scores of people the world over. You have to try it to believe it!

We live in a hectic world, where the affects of acute and chronic stress can have serious impacts on our health. Although conventional and alternative medicine offers many options for stress management, there is an ancient healing technique that works especially well: Reiki energy work.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese energy technique that produces a relaxation response to reduce the feelings of stress. Reiki practitioners are trained to tap into the Universal energy force and, by the laying on of hands, transmit healing energy to another person or animal. The premise of Reiki, which is a very spiritual stress management technique, is that it increases your life energy. Reiki is considered to be a holistic therapy because it addresses the mind, body and spirit.
While Reiki is spiritually based, it isn’t associated with any specific religion. That’s why there are no intellectual or spiritual requirements to give or receive Reiki. In other words, you don’t need to have any particular beliefs about religion (or any beliefs at all) to either benefit from it or practice it.
Because Reiki is based on the principles of peace, harmony and balance, anyone can learn it. Although it’s a simple technique, the process must be passed on from a Reiki master to her student during a process called “attunement.”
What to Expect During a Reiki Treatment
During a Reiki treatment, you should be fully clothed and will usually lay flat on a massage-like table, although seated or standing positions can be used in a pinch. It’s important to be comfortable and warm, so let your practitioner know if you need to adjust your position. (Simple things, like placing a pillow under your knees to relieve low back pressure or adding a lightweight blanket, can increase your comfort level.)
When the Reiki session begins, your practitioner may close her eyes and take a moment to gather her own energy before placing her hands on or near your body. As the treatment progresses, your practitioner will move her hands along your body, concentrating on areas that relate to your specific issues. When using Reiki for stress management, for example, your practitioner may spend extra time around tense neck and shoulder muscles. Although even a few minutes of Reiki can reduce stress, a typical full-length treatment can last anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes.
A full-length Reiki treatment should make you feel extremely relaxed and may even cause you to fall sleep. You should be able release the tension being held in your body as you reach a new level of peace.
Why You Should Choose Reiki for Relaxation
Reiki practitioners believe that negativity doesn’t exist solely in the brain. Instead, they believe that negative thoughts and feelings are also stored in other areas of the body and in the body’s surrounding energy field (known as the aura). When negative energy collects in and around the body, the flow of life force, or Ki, is restricted. This results in headaches, body pains, feelings of stress and, if left untreated, more serious physical illness.
The healing energy of Reiki is guided by a Higher Intelligence that intuitively understands how to release restrictions to the flow of Ki. This energy is able to work in harmony with the unconscious mind to dissolve negative thoughts and help remove them from the body and its aura. As these energy blocks are cleared, your Ki begins to flow unhindered, sending the healing life force to unhealthy bones, organs and tissues. With a consistent treatment plan, Reiki allows your body to heal itself and restore optimal balance and function.
Although people with serious health problems should consult their doctor before undergoing treatment, there are no known side effects associated with Reiki, which is proven to be a safe therapy for people in all stages of wellness or ill health.
Stress management is often a lifelong pursuit that requires an entire toolbox of traditional and alternative therapies for maximum relief. Consider incorporating Reiki treatments into your self-care regimen. The only thing you’ve got to lose is a little stress!

Three Degrees of Reiki Training

Reiki is a traditional ‘energy-based’ healing practice, with roots in Japan, though the practice itself has in the last 80 or so years of its existence spread to much of the world beyond Japan, particularly finding widespread appeal in the United States.Reiki is carried out by trained practitioners (either to heal themselves or their ‘clients’) and there are three degrees of Reiki training. In the first degree of Reiki training, potential practitioners get familiarized with the basic principles of the practice. Among the most basic things learnt at this degree are the way to hold their hands while in practice (in order to make the healing take effect), as well as the Reiki code of conduct and other such basics. It is not hard to attain the first degree of Reiki training. Indeed, the recommended training period is just four days, during which the student’s are given the first four ‘attunements’ of Reiki, which are important here as Reiki healing is based on properly ‘attuning’ one’s – or one’s patient’s energy. So the student is given one attunement a day. And with these, the new Reiki practitioner can not only heal themselves of various ailments, but also even heal others seeking their help in healing. In the second degree of Reiki training, the potential practitioner is introduced to the often secret Reiki symbols and how to employ them in the healing practice. Here, again, the potential practitioner is given a further attunement, and with this, he cannot not only heal himself or others near him, but also heal others away from him. The attunement given here also increases the strength of the healing. Then there is the third degree of Reiki training. This is seen as the ultimate qualification in Reiki training, an attainment of which confers to one the title of Reiki master. A Reiki master can not only heal themselves and others seeking their help, but they can also train other potential Reiki practitioners. And since training Reiki practitioners essentially involves giving attunements to them, then it follows that the practitioner who attains the third degree of Reiki training can now actually give attunements to other people seeking to become Reiki practitioners themselves. The attainment of Reiki mastery is not very easy – especially in the more conservative forms of Reiki teachings – and it might therefore be years before a student can earn this third degree of Reiki training (though it might be even possible to earn it in a day in the more ‘liberal’ Reiki practices).  The traditional name for this third degree of Reiki training was Shinpiden, and it is actually Hawayo Takata (one of the earliest practitioners of Reiki healing) who introduced the term ‘Reiki master’ for this level of Reiki training. Hawayo, who had traveled very widely in the United States (and who is responsible for the spread of Reiki to the states and indeed to the rest of the world outside Japan) also introduced a mark-up price for training at this level, namely ten thousand US dollars.

The Basics Of Reiki

After a 3 week fasting retreat on Mount Kumara in Japan in the early 1920s, Mikao Usui developed Reiki. Two Japanese symbols make up the word Reiki, they are Rei, which is Spirit and Ki, which is life force. Therefore, the practice of Reiki is the channeling of the universal Spirit energy, life force. It involves the Reiki practitioner lying on of their hands to channel this energy into the recipients body. During a Reiki treatment, the recipient lies fully clothed upon a couch, the practitioner will then make gentle contact along various parts of the body. There are times when the energy flow channels without actually touching the body. Some practitioners hold a distance of just a few centimeters away from the body. However, Reiki treatments are applicable remotely or by long distance. At these times, the flow of energy focuses on a symbol, which represents the recipient, who is located in a different area.
Reiki practitioners believe that this energy is universal, and does not originate from the practitioner rather it flows freely from the Universe into the top of the head or the crown chakra and continues to flow out through the hands and into the recipient. Since this is Universal energy at work, it can be practiced on oneself as well as learned and used by any number of individuals, no matter their intellect or other abilities.
Reiki is classified as an alternative, harmonizing therapy it is not a religion. By attuning these energy flows within the body, while clearing any blockage of energy, it has a holistic influence. Reiki has no claim of providing immediate relief of any individual pains; there is personal evidence that Reiki is helpful for a vast number of ailments. Reiki works by supporting and stimulating the natural healing process of the body. The recipient must be a willing participant, in order for Reiki to work efficiently, sin any resistance by the recipient will cancel out the effects of a treatment. A variety of physical reactions during Reiki treatments have been reported, such as twitching while no one else may feel a thing, warmth, cold and tingling. Very often, a Reiki treatment provides you with a feeling of relaxation and mental calmness.
Typically, a Reiki session involves the lying on of hands to particular areas of the body for about 3 to 5 minutes, before moving on to the next area. There may be up to 20 different areas to covered, such as the head, the back and front of the torso, the knees and feet. The whole treatment can last anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour and a half. If there is a particular complaint or problem, the treatment can be localized in its focus and intent. Reiki can be practiced in a formal setting as well as an informal setting, which combines with social interaction. At these times, each practitioner may take a turn at being the recipient of such treatments.
Reiki practices may include:
- Kenyoku Ho
This is a practice of cleansing the body, heart and spirit. It involves the sweeping movements of the hands to alternate from the right shoulder to the left hip and then from the left shoulder to the right hip.
- Hatsurei Ho
This is a practice of unifying the body and mind, while purifying the mind. It involves sitting still or the seiza position, while reciting precise, calming verses of poetry.
Keep in mind that it is not recommendable to discontinue any form of treatment in lieu of Reiki treatments, since it does not claim to be a substitute for any form of treatment. Reiki does however, offer various potential benefits. It has been graciously received, since its introduction to the west, in 1938, but Hawayo Takata. Reiki has many powerful advantages, such as being simple to learn and practice, while being non-invasive, with little to no bad side effects and it can be self-administered.
Although, Reiki is not a religion, it does promote more than a few principles of origin, these are attributed to Emperor Meiji, and they include:
Just for today – Be compassionate and honest with yourself and with others.
Just for today – Avoid worrisome anger.
Following these principles are very beneficial and helpful, regardless of the other benefits provided by the practice of Reiki.

What is Reiki?

To us Reiki, the energy, is `spiritual’ energy or `sacred’ energy or we believe Japanese Reiki Master Inamoto Hyakuten called it something like `big’ energy to help explain to us its literal translation. This is it – THE energy.

We’ll try to explain how we see it though we’re sure to come up against linguistic limitations. It is also extremely difficult to talk about ‘it’ (Reiki energy) when we are `it’ already. Therefore some meanings may come across as dualistic in nature when that was never our intent.

Right from the very beginning we find different wordings in the translation alone. This doesn’t make the job of finding out what Reiki is any easier.

There are so many varied explanations as to what Reiki is. Is it different to the energies used by other systems are there different sorts of Reiki? We think it might even be easier to start with what we don’t think it is and discuss varied beliefs about Reiki before moving on to what we feel that it is.

We don’t see Reiki energy as a specific sort of energy but something much `greater’ than that.

We don’t see the energy used in Reiki as different to the energy used in Qi Gong, Yoga, etc… Rather it is the way that energy is utilized that produces different results (the feelings of denseness or higher vibration etc..).

Each system has its own techniques, practises and methods to aid practitioners in developing specific skills. At a basic level these skills differ according to the process undertaken by practitioners as taught in each system.

We believe there are a number of reasons as to why some Reiki practitioners feel that Reiki appears to produce different results to other energetic practices. It is good to remember we are talking about results here. This is not the energy (even here the word `energy’ might be inappropriate – especially for those of you who are scientific – is spirit or essence a better representation of what we are talking about?) itself.

The techniques taught in specific systems (such as Qi Gong, Yoga etc…) would have been developed for different reasons. For example chopping bricks with a bare hand is a technique belonging to a distinctive system for specific reasons. Though there are many different energetic systems, the ultimate result of working with energy is for the same purpose – to know enlightenment.

In Reiki we do not practise these sort of energy techniques, our intent and focus is different though ultimately we too are working toward enlightenment. Instead we may learn symbols and mantras to aid us in sensing energy, and hatsurei ho to develop our ability to channel more energy through the body. This does not mean however that the energy is different.

Some use psychics or spiritual guides to aid them in their understanding of what Reiki is or isn’t. But this still comes down to an individual’s interpretation (at whatever level) and is subjective. Therefore we do not see it that systems are energetically different. What is different are the variety of techniques taught (even within the system of Reiki) and then there is the individuality if those who practise these techniques.

We also do not see that there are different flavours of Reiki energy – rather different flavours of thought, practice and intention. We consider Reiki to be the energy (or spirit or essence) of everything. So we are not separate from it – it just is.

So where does the concept that there are different flavours of energy in Reiki originate from?

It may originate from a particular understanding of the attunement process. Some believe that an attunement enters one into a specific energetic path (the energetic path of their system or teacher). We don’t view the attunement in that way. The attunement is one of the elements of the system of Reiki but it is not necessarily the most important aspect. Each of the elements work together to create a system that aids us in developing our energetic strength and clearing energy in the body. Traditionally it seems that the attunement never appears to have made someone into something – whether that be a level or a member of a system. It simply supported practitioners in their own energetic work.

Ultimately, we feel that everybody is born with the ability to use the energy of Reiki for healing. It is an innate ability. We are Reiki energy. There is no IT and US.

On the other hand the actual SYSTEM of Reiki is a sum number of practices (hands-on practise, techniques and meditations, symbols and mantras, attunements and the precepts) that when brought together create something unique – the system of Reiki. A practise that supports an individual’s spiritual growth – this practise includes the ability to heal one’s self and to strengthen one’s capacity to channel energy and if our dedication is true and strong – perhaps to know enlightenment.

So why do people love Reiki courses so much when they already have the ability to do it? For many it is the unparalleled joy of the reminder that within themselves is their spiritual heart or core. After that initial joy it is the inner growth that occurs from working within a structure designed to work on oneself energetically (you can replace `spiritually’ here with the word `energetically’).

A practitioner’s commitment to, and time allotted to, self-practise will obviously benefit and develop his/her practise. As with everything in life the more we put into it the more we get out. The more self- practise that one undertakes, the more energy that is cleared in the body – with all the beneficial repercussions that come from clearing.

Using the techniques taught in Reiki we connect with ourselves again – whether it be the hands-on element, the meditations, the attunements, working with the symbols and mantras or looking deeply into the precepts. Reiki has much to offer – from many varied angles.

Each day we feel different and will consequently feel energy differently – nothing ever stays the same. What can happen sometimes is that if someone says – the energy is going to feel like this and that, then that is most probably how the energy will feel. We are very open to suggestion – especially when discussing something as illusive as energy (or essence or spirit). It is best to accept the sensations for what they are rather than to try to name them. They are the sensations not the energy itself.

The ultimate aim of our practise is to remember who we are – Reiki.

Healing Hands – a Reiki Faq

Healing hands – A Reiki FAQ

Reiki is often misunderstood by the mainstream media and public opinion. Seen as a hoax or even witchcraft and an opening into devil worship! Misinformation and poor understanding of Reiki has led to many myths developing so I thought I would but down a simple FAQ about the main aspects of Reiki to help bring a clearer picture to the art.Q. “What is Reiki?”A. Reiki is originally a Japanese art of energy healing which promotes stress reduction and relaxation that promotes self healing. It is typically administered by laying hands on a person to allow life force energy to flow into the subject. Boosting this energy helps us by being happier and healthier which can counter illness.Q. “What does it feel like?”A. Reiki treatment has been described as sensations of heat or coolness, “pins and needles” tingling, vibrational buzzing, electrical sparks, Throbbing, numbness, itchiness and even drowsiness.Q. “Where does this energy come from?”A. The energy that flows from Reiki does not come from the Reiki practitioner not from the patient. The energy comes from the universe and has an infinite supply.Q. “Is Reiki a religion?”A. No! Reiki is not a religion. While spiritual in nature Reiki does not have any dogma or churches or anything of the sort. It is also not linked to faith healing or witchcraft. It can be seen as a very personal spiritual thing and many have attributed it to feeling closer to god if they are religious but the foundations of Reiki are not religious in nature. Reiki will in fact work whether you believe in it or not!Q. “Can I stop going to the doctor if I use Reiki?”A. Reiki works in conjunction with all other medicine and most Reiki practitioners do not recommend you do not seek out conventional medical advice in favor of Reiki only. Reiki can be used along side all other treatments for tremendous benefit.Q. “Can i treat myself with Reiki?”A. Yes you can! This is a great asset of Reiki that you can use the same treatment of others on yourself to promote your own health.Q. “Can anyone learn Reiki?”A. Again Yes! Reiki can be learned by anyone at all. Adult, child, male, female, skeptic and believer Reiki can be taught to anyone you do not need any prerequisite talent or initiation.Q. “Can Reiki be used at a distance?”A. Yes, at a higher level of Reiki you can send energy to anyone at any distance. You need to have a picture of the person or their name on a piece of paper and use one of the symbols you have learnt to send energy to that person.Q. “What are Reiki Symbols?”A. The Reiki symbols are simply tools to use as focus points.Q. “Is Reiki dangerous?”A. Reiki is not an intrusive treatment but one that promotes the body to heal itself. In this way it is believed to be very safe as there are no external chemicals like medicine and no surgery. Just energy flow that removes blockages from the body and promotes self healing that the body knows how to do!

There are many more questions I am sure but I hope this has provided an overview to Reiki and its benefits!
