What is Reiki, and How Can it Help you Heal?

In a nutshell, Reiki is a healing art that can help people with various types of physical and emotional healing needs. It involves the healer placing his or her hands on or over the client without actually manipulating any parts of the body. You may have seen similar healing modalities such as healing touch and therapeutic touch. But Reiki is not the same thing. Nor is Reiki the same thing between its practitioners. The oldest and most potent form of Reiki is formally known as The Usui System Of Natural Healing According To Hawayo Takata. It is called this because it was discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan and was developed by Mrs. Hawayo Takata. “Reiki” was the word Dr. Usui used to describe his discovery. Since being introduced by Takata to the United States in the 1970s, Reiki has become diluted and intertwined among other “healing” arts and modalities. Some people have even “invented” their own styles of Reiki.

But what is Reiki, really? How does it work? That is summed up in the word itself. “Ki” is the word to describe the universal life force that keeps everything alive and in motion. Ki, or chi, is the force that gives your heart the energy to beat, your lungs to breathe, your brain to think, and for you to become inspired. “Rei” means “movement.” Thus, we have the practice of moving the life force energy in order to create a healing effect. We all have the ability to do this to some degree. We always feel just a bit better when we hold our ankle for a while after tripping off a curb. A child feels more soothed and happy when we hold our hand over his or her cut finger. In effect, we are moving energy to create healing. The Reiki practitioner is specially attuned to do this in a much more magnified way, and the magnification of the moving force of energy has many implications. It can help a headache to go away. It can help a deep cut heal without scarring. It can help a person concentrate better while studying. And it can help a person overcome deep emotional hurts. It is a powerful healing force that balances the energies within the body to bring a state of wellness to all of its parts and to the whole.

A complete Reiki session is best performed in a relaxing environment, a quiet studio or office with soft music or sounds that are pleasing to the ear. The client lies on a massage table but is not unclothed at all. The practitioner then places his or her hands on or over different body areas, twelve on the front side of the body and five on the back. Even though no private areas are involved, the client has the right to let the practitioner know on which areas they do not feel comfortable being touched. In that case, the practitioner can hold his or her hands over the area, and the client receives the same healing benefit. A complete session lasts anywhere between sixty and seventy-five minutes, depending on one’s specific needs. Personally, the longest session I ever performed was two hours in length. The practitioner will hold their hands over a certain area longer if they sense that more healing energy is needed in that area. During the session, both the client and the practitioner may feel different sensations in different areas of the body, such as extreme warmth, tingling, or a deep relaxation. These sensations are clues as to where the healing energy is needed and indicate that the energy is definitely working. If a person is receiving a session because of emotional or subconscious needs, they may experience feelings of emotional “release” and relief. After the session, one definitely feels that something has changed for the better.

At the Sufletesc Center located in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota, I practice the original Usui System Of Natural Healing According To Hawayo Takata. Since I began practicing Reiki in June of 1998, I’ve taken care of many people who have said to me that they have been to other Reiki “practitioners” but somehow felt an enormously powerful difference between what I did and what they received from others. I then explain to them that there are different types of Reiki out there, and what I do is the unadulterated version. This leads to the discussion of what is involved in the training of a Reiki practitioner. First of all, you CANNOT learn Reiki in an all-in-one weekend that costs only $100. I have had Reiki “Masters” (teachers) ask me about things that I do that they never learned. In the original Usui system, there are three degrees of practice. The First Degree practitioner works with physical conditions. The Second Degree practitioner can take care of emotional and subconscious healing matters and can even perform healing sessions in-absentia (from a distance). Then there is the Master level. While the practitioner is complete in his or her abilities at the second degree, the Master is the one who attunes and teaches others. The cost of training in the original method is $150 for First Degree, $500 for Second Degree (after a three month training period), and, after a three-year period of practice, one can become a Reiki Master for $10,000, which entails a lengthy, detailed apprenticeship.

The most important thing for you to know is that it can help you no matter what ails you, what bothers you, what pent up emotional disturbances you may suffer from, or what strange addictions you may have. It is also beneficial to the person who wants to maintain their state of wellness. Many hospitals offer Reiki to their patients to help them relax before a procedure and to heal faster afterwards. There has even been a study done several years ago at the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center in Cleveland, Ohio proving that people who receive Reiki healing do recover faster from open heart surgery. Several other studies have been conducted since that time. When I am caring for a chiropractic patient who is experiencing a tremendous amount of muscle tension and mental apprehension, I place my hands on them for several minutes, if they are willing to accept the treatment. This relaxes the patient, which allows the chiropractic adjustment to be delivered with greater ease and less stress. Reiki has helped me to be a better chiropractor. It can certainly help you to be a healthier person!

What is Reiki Self Attunement?

Reiki Self Attunement is simply a Reiki attunement that a person does alone to attune him/herself. They are popular because it is not necessary to visit a practitioner or even leave home and especially you can attune by your self with your powerful energy that already inside you.
Reiki energy is universal and limitless. It is around us and inside of us. Whether or not we are aware of the energy, it still exists. Very simple?? thats why Reiki Self Attunement can be more effective.

A Reiki self attunement can be just as effective as an attunement performed by a master. An attunement allows us to be aware of the energy, focus the energy and use it to heal ourselves or others. A lot of Master are opening classes or courses to teach people who want access the Reiki energy or become a reiki practitioner but in my opinion if you have already to know what is reiki, you don’t have to join that reiki class or reiki course.

After a Reiki self attunement, you should be more aware of the universal energy or reiki energy. You should be able to access and use the energy for any good purpose such as heal yourself, your family or some you love.

If you have some traumas, both large and small, can negatively affect your life, your physical and mental health, a Reiki self attunement can help you with the “letting go”. Also you will know what the best for you to live health and wealth.

A Reiki self attunement can be beneficial to any person, regardless of their beliefs. It works with any religion or with no religion. Reiki energy is universal that anyone can access in anywhere, anyplace, no matter of time.

What to Look for In a Reiki Course

Reiki is a traditional form of healing, with its roots in Japan, but which has in the last few decades spread and gained popularity in many other parts of the world. To become an effective Reiki practitioner, one has to take a training course. These courses are normally offered by people who have attained the third degree of Reiki training, since it is the attainment of that third degree of Reiki training that gives one the title of a Reiki master, with the ability to confer ‘attunements’ to new student practitioners. And in order to perform Reiki healing either on oneself or on others, one needs to make use of the attunements which in turn can only be attained from a Reiki master, meaning that Reiki is an art you have to learn by signing up for a course; and it is therefore not something you can learn by yourself, as you would not be able to confer the relevant attunements to yourself. There are numerous people offering Reiki courses, and if you are considering taking up one, you will naturally find yourself having to make a choice of one over the other. And as a criterion for choosing a Reiki course, there are a number of things you need to look for.The first and foremost thing you need to look for in a Reiki course is the school of thought the people offering the course subscribe to. This is because there are many schools of thought in Reiki, and you need to see whether the philosophy of the school of thought the practitioners of Reiki offering the course subscribe to is compatible with your expectations of Reiki. This is in turn because there are schools of thought in Reiki teaching that emphasize on the self-healing properties of Reiki (where the ideal state would be having everybody subscribe to Reiki for their own healing), while there are those that view that view Reiki as a specialized field, with an aim of learning it to heal others in the same way a few people go to medical school to learn medicine in order to be able to treat the rest of the population. The other major thing you need to look at in a Reiki course is the Reiki master offering it – and see if he or she is a person you would love working with. Remember, as mentioned earlier, Reiki is a discipline that depends to a large extent on master to student impartation, and therefore not one of things where the role of the teacher is detached from the learning process. The knowledge and experience of the master in Reiki practice are other things you might also want to look at, in addition to rapport between you and him or her.Costs vary between the Reiki courses offered by different schools, and this too might be a factor you can look at in choosing a Reiki course. According to one authoritative website on this subject, Reiki courses for the first degree, for instance vary from between $75 at the lowest end, to $200 at the higher end, with the costs at the master teacher level varying between $500 and $10,000 – meaning that comparing the figures (without compromising training standards) can yield worthwhile savings.

Hands-on Healing

Do you believe that you can be healed of sicknesses by someone laying his or her hands on you? You may have read accounts of this in various religious books like the Bible. Anything is possible and these days, we are seeing more and more of such practices. One such example of hands-on healing is in Reiki. Hands-on Healing If you have never heard of Reiki before, allow me to introduce it to you. Reiki is the ancient Japanese art of healing using the hands, thought, symbols and other techniques. It was founded by Dr. Mikao Usui who was very intrigued when he read the Bible about how Jesus Christ could heal people when He laid His hands on them. This led him to do his own research into the phenomenon. As a result, he formulated a set of beliefs, principles and techniques we know as Reiki today. Reiki itself has evolved over the years primarily due to other practitioners after Dr. Usui who further developed the techniques. In the original Reiki teaching, Dr. Usui had 3 levels of training. But today, it is not unusual to find Reiki trainings that have 7 levels or more. Reiki Healer How does Reiki healing work? As you can imagine, there is no correlation between Reiki and modern medical science so there is no way to explain Reiki methods physiologically or scientifically. But basically, Reiki centers on the principle that the human body is a field of energy that gives it life and health. When this energy is disrupted or blocked, the body becomes sick. This belief is also found in other ancient therapies like Ayurveda and traditional Chinese acupuncture. The function of the Reiki practitioner is to restore the flow of life energy and thus bring healing to the sick. Reiki is able to bring about the same benefits as traditional massage. It can alleviate pain, lower stress, increase energy, strengthen the immune system and improve symptoms of acute and chronic diseases like asthma and arthritis. It can also speed up recovery from trauma and surgery. Reiki Master Besides the physical healing benefits of Reiki, there are also emotional and mental benefits. You can experience emotional healing and mental wellbeing through Reiki. In Reiki, it is taught that the body has 7 energy centers called chakras. When these chakras are properly energized, they improve your senses of security, pleasure, creativity, intuition and focus among other things. It also brings about a release of pent-up negative emotions due to your past experiences. All these lend themselves to your emotional healing and mental stability. The result is that you will become a more balanced, stable and wholesome individual that knows how to relate to the world and people around you.

Three Degrees of Reiki Training

Reiki is a traditional ‘energy-based’ healing practice, with roots in Japan, though the practice itself has in the last 80 or so years of its existence spread to much of the world beyond Japan, particularly finding widespread appeal in the United States.Reiki is carried out by trained practitioners (either to heal themselves or their ‘clients’) and there are three degrees of Reiki training. In the first degree of Reiki training, potential practitioners get familiarized with the basic principles of the practice. Among the most basic things learnt at this degree are the way to hold their hands while in practice (in order to make the healing take effect), as well as the Reiki code of conduct and other such basics. It is not hard to attain the first degree of Reiki training. Indeed, the recommended training period is just four days, during which the student’s are given the first four ‘attunements’ of Reiki, which are important here as Reiki healing is based on properly ‘attuning’ one’s – or one’s patient’s energy. So the student is given one attunement a day. And with these, the new Reiki practitioner can not only heal themselves of various ailments, but also even heal others seeking their help in healing. In the second degree of Reiki training, the potential practitioner is introduced to the often secret Reiki symbols and how to employ them in the healing practice. Here, again, the potential practitioner is given a further attunement, and with this, he cannot not only heal himself or others near him, but also heal others away from him. The attunement given here also increases the strength of the healing. Then there is the third degree of Reiki training. This is seen as the ultimate qualification in Reiki training, an attainment of which confers to one the title of Reiki master. A Reiki master can not only heal themselves and others seeking their help, but they can also train other potential Reiki practitioners. And since training Reiki practitioners essentially involves giving attunements to them, then it follows that the practitioner who attains the third degree of Reiki training can now actually give attunements to other people seeking to become Reiki practitioners themselves. The attainment of Reiki mastery is not very easy – especially in the more conservative forms of Reiki teachings – and it might therefore be years before a student can earn this third degree of Reiki training (though it might be even possible to earn it in a day in the more ‘liberal’ Reiki practices).  The traditional name for this third degree of Reiki training was Shinpiden, and it is actually Hawayo Takata (one of the earliest practitioners of Reiki healing) who introduced the term ‘Reiki master’ for this level of Reiki training. Hawayo, who had traveled very widely in the United States (and who is responsible for the spread of Reiki to the states and indeed to the rest of the world outside Japan) also introduced a mark-up price for training at this level, namely ten thousand US dollars.

Reiki – the Re-discovered Art

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness, that most frightens us…..

Nelson Mandela

1994 Inaugural Speech

A Japanese system of natural healing called Reiki is based on channeling healing energy through the hands. This healing art was lost for centuries but was rediscovered by Dr Usui in the early 1900′s in Japan. Reiki is a special kind of healing energy that has its own consciousness. The practitioner does not guide Reiki energy.

This healing energy guides itself by communicating with the clients higher self and goes naturally to where the client needs healing.

When a practitioner of Reiki, is doing a healing they sometimes feel heat or cold or tingling in the hands when the hands pass over an area that needs to be healed. The Reiki energy will automatically go where the healing needs to be done.

A Reiki Practitioner does not need to learn how to do Reiki as you would learn other healing techniques. Reiki is simply passed on to the student through a Reiki Master. This is called an attunement. The Reiki master uses different symbols to pass on for different levels of Reiki. There are 3 levels of Reiki and the Master Level.

It is a very simple and easy process. The student can immediately start giving Reiki treatments. To start giving the treatments the Reiki Practitioner draws the symbols for what level they are at, in the palms of the hands to activate the healing energy. Your intentions alone can activate the energy itself to do a healing. The Practitioner

is shown where to place the hands on the person to be healed. Then the healing Begins. When you are healing with energy time and space are irrelevant. Therefore Reiki Healing can also be sent at a distance. This is called long distant healing.

In 1938 Mrs Takata brought Reiki to the western world. After the second world war Mrs Takata was the only practicing Reiki Master in the world.

She was the only teacher to be taught from and she was very rigid in her teaching trying to keep the tradition going. Some students became more concerned in keeping the tradition they ignored there own intuition and inner knowledge.

In 1970 to become a master she would charge a fee of $10,000 dollars for the Master Level training. This would discourage many would be teachers. She discouraged students to expand their many different levels of guidance. Her way would be the only way.

Eventually Reiki lost some of it vitality for each teacher passed on a little less than the time before. As time went on and more teachers were trained the price to become a master went down. The nature of the Reiki energy began to heal its own expression. Deeper aspects of healing began to surface. Reiki was found to heal deeper and deeper.

Students were being allowed to branch off and listen to their own guidance and healing techniques. They began experimenting, adding knowledge and talking and exchanging information with others.

By doing this depth was added to their understanding and they developed their own style, improving the effectiveness of their own healing abilities.

Because people have opened up Reiki has been able to evolve, develop and grow.

Reiki heals and guides all those who practice it. To choose a teacher you want to pass the attunements on to you use your own guidance and be aware of what this persons energy feels like to you, Then decide.

Reiki Treatments For Different Ailments

Reiki treatments are considered as a holistic, natural way for energy healing. The direct meaning or translation of Reiki is traced back to two Japanese words. One is Rein which really means free passage and the other is Kid which means vital life force energy so together, the words mean universal life energy because it is believed that this powerful energy refers to the life force that permeates throughout the universe.
The main goal of a Reiki practitioner is to correctly channelize this positive and powerful energy through the position of the hands so that the body natural capacity for healing is triggered on. This is one of the best things about Reiki treatment because a practitioner is able to share positive energy flow with someone who needs healing on many different levels such as physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. That said, it is important to reiterate that no guarantee is ever provided to assure a person that complete cure would happen but the belief is that cure will definitely happen.
Reiki healing is a natural process that propels an awareness of wholeness, balance and inner peace so as to combat stress. This is why Reiki treatments are mostly referred to as hands on, energy giving treatment with the ability to treat a whole person body, mind and spirit in total harmony.
The Reiki treatment begins as the healer rubs both hands together. Then the hands are placed on the body of the recipient or even just above the body of the recipient so that the healing takes place without any kind of obstruction.
Be aware of the fact that the reiki healing is packed with positive energy so that it can easily heal whatever part of your body, mind, or spirit is most in need of healing. During the sessions for healing, it is natural for both the healer as well as you to experience prickly sensation or cold feeling or maybe no feelings at all. Reiki energy will adjust itself to this kind of varied intensity depending on the needs of the recipient.
Reiki treatment heals in the following way:
* It relaxes at a deep level
* Gets rid of energy blockages
* Helps to detoxify
* Offers new and positive energy that is propelled by universal life energy
* Enhances the vibrational frequency of the body of the recipient
* All kinds of stress related diseases including headache, migraine, sinus, asthma, allergy, arthritis, back pain, diabetes, blood pressure, gastric ulcer, hepatitis, menstrual problems, scleroderma, sinusitis, spondylitis, and many other diseases.
* The negative energy that is usually the result of conventional medicines such as chemotherapy or AIDS related medication can be easily avoided as there are no side effects in Reiki treatment.
Reiki healing is unique because powerful energy transmitted from a competent healer to a recipient irrespective of distance as well because telephonic healing is also possible. Note that this treatment of Reiki is not linked with any religious or spiritual path so it is effective to treat everyone.
Treatment with Reiki is a positive way to promote peace, relaxation and stress reduction. This powerful treatment can be used on other forms of life as well such as plants, animals and in earth healing.
For pregnant women as well, Reiki treatment is suitable because it helps to alleviate morning sickness and back pain without much difficulty. This treatment works really well for physical, mental and emotional aspects so it helps in overall healing.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word believed to represent universal life energy. Every living thing has this universal energy. This energy source is tapped and channeled during Reiki therapy. Reiki is not believed to be a religious experience.
The Usui Natural Healing System, named after its founder Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian educator in Kyoto, Japan, is the traditional system used to ‘channel’ the energy known as Reiki energy. Two versions of the origin of the Reiki are known: One is that
After 21 years of searching-through various religious and esoteric manuscripts in several countries-for the ability to heal like Jesus, Usui … was struck in his third eye by a strong light-which came out of the darkness after a 21-day fasting meditation on Mount Kurama-imbuing him with the ability to heal.
The other version goes like this…
After facing certain business failure … Usui went to Mount Kurama and experienced a satori-or sudden understanding-about healing, whilst meditating under a waterfall, and as a consequence founded the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkei.
Reiki is a hands-on therapy, but it is very gentle and the body is not touched in any way. A Reiki practitioner provides the treatment sometimes on a massage table or mini-treatments that can be given with the client seated in a chair. The practitioner acts as a channel for the life energy and channels it into the recipient’s energy field and physical body by moving the hand for the top of the head downward. There are specific hand positions depending on the main energy points (known as “charkas”) of the body. Starting at the crown of the head, his/her hands will move down the body via the shoulders, the stomach, back, legs and feet. It does not involve any massaging. The energy goes to the deeper levels of a person’s being, the origin of many diseases. The whole body is attuned to, and resonates with, this incredible energy.
The unique feature of Reiki therapy is that the universal energy reaches the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels of the body and heals. It removes any blocks to the energy flow and relaxes the body. It cleanses the body of toxins and creates a state of balance. As Reiki energy encourages one to release tension, anxieties, and fears, a peaceful state of mind and feelings of happiness are usually experienced for some time after the treatment (usually for 3 days).
Reiki training is provided at many centers and institutes and the training takes months to a few years depending on the level of Reiki you want to master. Interestingly, books like Radical Reiki-Radical Life by Chris and Judith Conroy and The Essence of Reiki by Adele and Garry Malone provide instructions on becoming Reiki Masters by self-attunement within 48 hours!
Four sacred Reiki symbols are used for attuning other initiates into the Reiki lineage. The Reiki symbols are Sanskrit-derived Japanese forms. These are handed down from Master to Master and are used during the attunement as a means to focus attention in order to connect with “specific” healing frequencies. The different symbols boost up the Reiki energy.
Reiki can be used on people, animals, and plants. For the terminally ill, Reiki brings in a feeling of peace, comfort and inner strength. However, Reiki does not prolong the time of life allotted for a person on Earth!!

The Basics Of Reiki

After a 3 week fasting retreat on Mount Kumara in Japan in the early 1920s, Mikao Usui developed Reiki. Two Japanese symbols make up the word Reiki, they are Rei, which is Spirit and Ki, which is life force. Therefore, the practice of Reiki is the channeling of the universal Spirit energy, life force. It involves the Reiki practitioner lying on of their hands to channel this energy into the recipients body. During a Reiki treatment, the recipient lies fully clothed upon a couch, the practitioner will then make gentle contact along various parts of the body. There are times when the energy flow channels without actually touching the body. Some practitioners hold a distance of just a few centimeters away from the body. However, Reiki treatments are applicable remotely or by long distance. At these times, the flow of energy focuses on a symbol, which represents the recipient, who is located in a different area.
Reiki practitioners believe that this energy is universal, and does not originate from the practitioner rather it flows freely from the Universe into the top of the head or the crown chakra and continues to flow out through the hands and into the recipient. Since this is Universal energy at work, it can be practiced on oneself as well as learned and used by any number of individuals, no matter their intellect or other abilities.
Reiki is classified as an alternative, harmonizing therapy it is not a religion. By attuning these energy flows within the body, while clearing any blockage of energy, it has a holistic influence. Reiki has no claim of providing immediate relief of any individual pains; there is personal evidence that Reiki is helpful for a vast number of ailments. Reiki works by supporting and stimulating the natural healing process of the body. The recipient must be a willing participant, in order for Reiki to work efficiently, sin any resistance by the recipient will cancel out the effects of a treatment. A variety of physical reactions during Reiki treatments have been reported, such as twitching while no one else may feel a thing, warmth, cold and tingling. Very often, a Reiki treatment provides you with a feeling of relaxation and mental calmness.
Typically, a Reiki session involves the lying on of hands to particular areas of the body for about 3 to 5 minutes, before moving on to the next area. There may be up to 20 different areas to covered, such as the head, the back and front of the torso, the knees and feet. The whole treatment can last anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour and a half. If there is a particular complaint or problem, the treatment can be localized in its focus and intent. Reiki can be practiced in a formal setting as well as an informal setting, which combines with social interaction. At these times, each practitioner may take a turn at being the recipient of such treatments.
Reiki practices may include:
- Kenyoku Ho
This is a practice of cleansing the body, heart and spirit. It involves the sweeping movements of the hands to alternate from the right shoulder to the left hip and then from the left shoulder to the right hip.
- Hatsurei Ho
This is a practice of unifying the body and mind, while purifying the mind. It involves sitting still or the seiza position, while reciting precise, calming verses of poetry.
Keep in mind that it is not recommendable to discontinue any form of treatment in lieu of Reiki treatments, since it does not claim to be a substitute for any form of treatment. Reiki does however, offer various potential benefits. It has been graciously received, since its introduction to the west, in 1938, but Hawayo Takata. Reiki has many powerful advantages, such as being simple to learn and practice, while being non-invasive, with little to no bad side effects and it can be self-administered.
Although, Reiki is not a religion, it does promote more than a few principles of origin, these are attributed to Emperor Meiji, and they include:
Just for today – Be compassionate and honest with yourself and with others.
Just for today – Avoid worrisome anger.
Following these principles are very beneficial and helpful, regardless of the other benefits provided by the practice of Reiki.
